45% of the money for health goes for subsidizing drug prices

Dr. Madzharov

Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Association, Dr. Ivan Madzharov, expressed his approval for the priorities announced by the new Minister of Health, Prof. Hristo Hinkov - stopping the uncontrolled expansion of the healthcare network of hospitals and reducing the co-payments made by patients.

According to Dr. Madzharov, Bulgaria has the highest percentage of payment for medicines in the EU compared to the money allocated for health care. The average share in the EU is 15 percent, and in Bulgaria the money for medicines reaches almost 45% of all healthcare costs. This imbalance must be corrected," Dr. Madzharov says. He told the BNR that the important thing was not just how much the budget allocates for health, but also how this resource is distributed.
