EU might end the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria

The European Commission has been making final steps to completely end the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria and Romania, "Politico" reports, referring to part of the reports under the monitoring mechanism for the rule of law, which will be published on July 5.

The mechanism was created in 2007 to report on the progress of Bulgaria and Romania in judicial reforms, the fight against corruption, and especially for Bulgaria, in the fight against organized crime. Continuing monitoring is one of the stumbling blocks on Bulgaria's path to the Schengen area. 25 out of the 27 EU Member States support the entry but the Netherlands and Austria are against it.

The Netherlands, which is against entry of Bulgaria, but not against that of Romania, requested a special report under the monitoring mechanism for Sofia, but the Commission refused, BNR correspondent in Brussels Angelina Piskova reports.
