Bulgaria has already set defence spending at 2% of GDP in 2024 and even higher next year. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

Commenting on NATO's new regional defence plan for the Black Sea, he noted that for the first time since the Cold War, plans are being made to prepare in case of a possible attack from the east.

"It is important for us to build on the capacity we have today and to integrate this capacity with the capacity of neighbouring countries - Romania, Turkey - and also with the capacity of other NATO countries," the prime minister added.

He also said he expected the Alliance to give Ukraine a clear prospect of membership when the right conditions were in place.
