Famous writers, journalists and scientists from Sofia sent an open letter to Bulgaria’s Prime Minister with an appeal to dismantle the Monument to the Soviet Army in the Bulgarian capital. The signatories express discontent that the Regional Governor of Sofia announced that the monument may not be moved by the end of 2023 because of the long procedure for design and coordination and because of lost documents.
According to journalist Yuliana Metodieva, which is one of the signatories, the relocation of the Monument to the Red Army is postponed for conjunctural considerations before the local elections. "The removal of the Monument to the Soviet Army from the heart of Sofia is a symbolic act from which the EU can very clearly read how Bulgaria is fulfilling its commitments to Ukraine and what position it is currently in" Yuliana Metodieva said for the BNR.
