Vasil Bozhkov has announced that he is returning to Bulgaria after a three-year "exile" in Dubai. The gambling boss with 19 charges announced the news on his Facebook profile and posted a photo on a plane.
Bozhkov emigrated to Dubai in early 2020, when two investigations were launched against him. The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office told BNT that if Bozhkov did indeed return, the Border Police should detain him as he is wanted. Bozhkov is wanted with a European Arrest Warrant and a Red Notice issued by Interpol. It is expected that after he lands at Sofia airport, the authorities of the Ministry of Interior would hand him over to investigators for pre-trial proceedings. Bozhkov will be interrogated after which the supervising prosecutors will consider whether to file a request for keeping him "in custody".
We recall that in the spring of 2022, the businessman announced that he had given testimonies in which he accused former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and the media adviser of the GERB leader Sevdalina Arnaudova of corruption. A little later, Borissov, Goranov and Arnaudova were arrested and 24 hours later they were released without being charged.
