Businessman Vassil Bozhkov detained at Sofia Airport

Businessman Vassil Bozhkov landed at Sofia Airport at 15.01pm on a flight from Dubai. After his arrival, the gambling mogul and former owner of PFC Levski was detained for 72 hours, the Prosecutor's Office said. The prosecution is expected to bring charges against him. Vassil Bozhkov is to be summoned as a witness in another pre-trial proceeding at the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office.

Bozhkov, who left Bulgaria for Dubai in January 2020, is charged with unlawfull possession of cultural assets, leading an organized crime group, extortion, bribery, trading in influence, money laundering, tax evasion, etc.

In May, the businessman wrote on Facebook from Dubai that he was ready to return to Bulgaria as a protected witness.

In the spring of 2022, the gambling mogul announced that he had given testimony accusing former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov of corruption and blackmail. A little later Borissov was arrested. 24 hours later Boyko Borissov was released from custody without charges.
