One of the most beautiful Bulgarian caves - Biserna Cave on the Shumen plateau, is now accessible to tourists. The natural site has the status of a scientific research site and receives visitors only twice a year.

The opening of the cave is aligned with the biological cycle of the bats that inhabit it, which are a protected species under the Biodiversity Act.

Nearly a thousand flying mammals of 14 species populate the galleries of Biserna Cave, said Nia Toshkova from the National Museum of Natural Sciences at the BAS.

Bats in Biserna Cave

Biologists hope that the number of bats in the cave will increase because they are very useful, eat insects and are the superheroes of ecosystems.

The visit to Biserna Cave takes place after prior registration. The walk is 800 m long in one direction at a temperature of about 10 degrees.
