PM defends scrapping ban on Ukrainian grain imports

"We believe it is right to to allow imports from Ukraine," Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov said before the regular government meeting.

There are two points of view - the first one being that of grain producers who demand the ban to remain in force, and accuse the government of "lack of any state support for the sector".

The second point of view, Denkov said, is that of the government, which cares about ensuring lower food and feed prices, lower inflation, more budget receipts from imports and exports without pumping up inflation, and support for affected grain farmers.

"Let's be clear - freeing imports from Ukraine will reduce prices of basic foodstuffs, reduce inflation, and thus support low-income people, increase budget revenues," the prime minister added. Denkov stressed that subsidies and aid for farmers have been paid and was surprised that "a sector that receives €1 billion a year can claim that "there is no state support whatsoever".
