The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has dropped the investigation, known as "Barcelonagate", against former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov due to a lack of evidence of a crime, the prosecuting magistracy said in a press release.

The investigation was launched three years ago over suspicions of money laundering in the purchase of a luxury real estate property in Barcelona, Spain, worth 3 million euros. According to the supervising prosecutors, the the testimonies of witnesses to the allegations that former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov bought a house in Barcelona do not contain evidence that would categorically indicate that the crime was committed, i.e. that Borissov personally or through an intermediary ordered the purchase of real estate in Spain in March 2013.

The house was bought with the funds of a commercial company for domestic and international tourism and related tourist services.

Because of "Barcelonagate" former Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev shortly before he was removed from office requested the immunity of the leader of GERB Boyko Borissov.
