The European Commission has called on Bulgaria to properly introduce EU rules for interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings, BTA reports. The rules provide for general minimum requirements for a fair trial of suspects and accused persons in criminal proceedings.

According to European requirements, suspects and accused persons who do not speak or understand the language of the criminal proceedings must receive an oral and written translation of all essential documents. According to the EC, in Bulgaria these rules do not apply to suspects who are not detained. The Commission gives Bulgaria two months to take the necessary measures.
