In local elections, small votes can swing the result

In local elections, the environment is much more fragmented and all sorts of surprises are possible, with smaller pools of votes able to influence the outcome.

"As you can see, the electoral process is susceptible to political technology," Parvan Simeonov, executive director of Gallup International Balkan, told BNR. In larger settlements, turnout is traditionally lower in the morning hours, he said.

The political analyst appealed to "everyone to vote their own mind, conscience and heart and not to be influenced by what is posted on various websites".  Turnout could increase in some precincts as people who were put off by the machines may decide to vote, Simeonov said. But he did not rule out the possibility of people showing up to vote "in protest and in compensation" for the removal of the voting machines.
