Farmers block road traffic in central Sofia

Farmers and greenhouse growers have taken to the streets to protest against what they say is a dire situation in the sector. They are demanding the resignation of Agriculture Minister Kirill Vatev and compensation for losses caused by imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. The protesters' procession set off from the Ministry of Agriculture and headed to the Council of Ministers in the centre of Sofia, where the demonstrators blocked traffic, BNR's Nadezhda Nikolova reported.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Alexander Yotsev told BNR that the action stemmed from 81 companies that have allready received the maximum amount of aid allowed under EU rules. "We have exhausted the possibilities of responding to such demands," Yotsev said. He explained that the ministry's aim was to ensure that the subsidies also reached smaller producers. "The way out of inflation is not to satisfy someone's financial demands," Yotsev added.
