Figures from Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia to be dismantled for safety reasons

The sculptures from the monument to the Soviet army will be dismantled within 30 days, the mayor of the Sredets region, Traicho Traikov, told BNT. 

"The structure is in a very bad condition. The safety plan calls for dismantling the sculptures and moving them to a place of storage and eventual restoration until it is time to display them elsewhere," explained the mayor. 

What will be at the place of the monument remains an open question, Traikov said. 

The regional administration of Sofia announced that the monument needs urgent restoration, which requires dismantling and moving. The monument has not been maintained for the past 70 years, as a result of which there are cracks in the castings and there is a real danger of elements falling from the figures, the analysis says. 

Because of the danger, the monument is now closed with a fence.
