Bulgaria's Karlos Nasar set a new world record on his first major return to the podium after a serious injury earlier this year. The Bulgarian weightlifter triumphed in the 89 kg category at the World Weightlifting Cup in Doha. Nasar set the record with a 393 kg total.

Dubbed Bulgaria's prodigy, 19-year-old Nаsar started successfully in the snatch with 165 and 170 kg, failing only at the last weight of 175 kg.

In the clean and jerk, he successively overcame 205 and 211 kg, then confidently lifted 223 kg. Thus, he recorded world records for men and for juniors up to 20 years old.

Within the year, the Bulgarian corrected the world record in the clean and jerk twice, after he had a successful attempt at 221 kg in April. In the summer, the achievement was improved by the Chinese Tao Tian, who lifted 222 kg. He was signed up for the race in Qatar but did not take part.

At the World Cup in Doha, which is an Olympic qualification for the Games in Paris 2024, Bulgaria's Ivan Dimov won a silver medal in the 67 kg category which is higher for him.
