Netherlands finally greenlights Bulgaria’s entry into Schengen

Bulgaria meets all conditions set down for accession to the Schengen area, hence we can agree to a decision that will lead to its full membership, according to a position by the government of the Netherlands, BNR’s correspondent in Brussels Anguelina Piskova reports.

However, the government of the Netherlands points out that monitoring after Bulgaria joins the Schengen border-free area ought to continue with regard to border control, as well as supremacy of law. The cabinet is also recommending the application of the Schengen regulations envisaging a full evaluation mission within one year after the country’s entry, and afterwards – periodical evaluations similar to the evaluations in the other member countries.

Austria which also opposed this country’s accession to the Schengen area, is upholding its position, even though, on Monday it declared it was inclined to certain concessions with regard to abolishing airport checks.
