Sofia expects legal recognition of the Bulgarian community in Kosovo

In Prizren, President Rumen Radev met with representatives of the Bulgarian community and the leaders of their associations in the country.

Protecting the rights and interests of all Bulgarians is a priority for the Bulgarian state and my personal priority as president, Rumen Radev said in Prizren, Kosovo, at a meeting with the Bulgarian community. He attended the opening of the office of a Bulgarian association, as well as the opening of the office of the Bulgarian Honorary Consul. Radev expressed gratitude for the fact that in difficult historical times the community has managed to preserve its Bulgarian identity, self-awareness and culture.


The President stated that there is a complete consensus in the institutions to support the Bulgarian communities abroad by financing new programs. 120 students from Kosovo are studying in Bulgaria. We hope that when these young people return here, they support their hometown or find a successful career, Radev wished.

He noted that his most important conversation with the President and Prime Minister of Kosovo was about finding all legal possibilities for the Bulgarian community to receive recognition and to find its place in the Advisory Council of Communities to the President of Kosovo. Radev stated that he has assurances from the hosts that this will happen as soon as possible. For the upcoming population census, Radev stressed that it was extremely important for everyone to freely declare their ethnicity.

The chairman of the "United Bulgarians" society, Rasmin Hamza, noted that it is important to recognize the Bulgarian minority in order to have basic rights. Bulgaria can help us with support, he added.
