Georgi and Maria are the most common names in Bulgaria in 2023

Georgi is the most common male name in Bulgaria for 2023. A total of 143,185 men are called this way. Second in popularity is the name Ivan - 130,551 people, and third - Dimitar (104,856 Bulgarians). 


Among women, the most popular name remains Maria (102,050 women), followed by Ivanka (48,639) and Elena (47,918), the National Statistical Institute reports.

In 2023, the most newborn boys were named Alexander - a total of 828 babies, and the most girls were named Victoria - 589 newborns.

Over 3.2 million Bulgarians will celebrate a name day on the main Christian holidays in 2024, with the largest number of them celebrating their name on Palm Sunday (Tvetnitsa in Bulgarian) (April 28, 2024).


Among the most common Muslim names in Bulgaria for newborn boys in 2023 were Emir (102 boys were named that way) and Mert (89), and for girls Melek (71) and Elif (68), NSI reported.
