On Midwives' Day (Babinden), Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov visited the state hospital in Montana. He attended the discharge of Alexandra, the first baby born in the city for 2024.

"We started with free nurseries and kindergartens in the 2023 and 2024 budgets. In the coming years, this policy will be enforced and we will allocate more and more funds for children and students, which Northwestern Bulgaria especially needs," said the Prime Minister. Denkov announced that the hospital in Montana has received money for the construction of a helipad for the transport of seriously ill patients, and within a year, it will be completed.

Gynecologists and midwives are celebrated in Bulgaria on the so-called Babinden, the Day of Maternity Care. Until 1968, it was celebrated on January 21. With the calendar reform of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, it has been moved to January 8, but traditionally January 21 is still celebrated as the Day of Maternity Care.

There are less than 3,800 midwives in the country, which is twice less than what is needed, according to the Association of Healthcare Professionals .
