A count of wintering waterbirds in Bulgaria will take place from 11 to 14 January 2024. It is organised by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and the Executive Environment Agency. Members of the Society and volunteers will survey more than 200 wetlands, including the Danube and Black Sea coasts, as well as all the reservoirs, lakes and rivers in the interior of the country where waterbirds winter.
Wintering waterbird counts are carried out in over 100 countries and cover some 25,000 wetlands. The information collected on numbers, species and distribution is used to assess changes in the status of waterbird populations and changes in their habitats.
