More than 4.46 million film-goers attended film screenings in Bulgaria last year, which is 15% more as compared to 2022, Bulgarian film distribution data show. There are 230 cinemas in Bulgaria. Ticket revenue increased by 20% year-on-year to over EUR 26.5 million. 410,785 people watched Bulgarian films in 2023. For comparison, a record-high number of people watched Bulgarian films in 2022- 644,000.
Ticket revenue from Bulgarian films decreased from almost EUR 3 million to EUR 2.17 million. In 2023, there were 28 premieres of Bulgarian films as compared to 25 premieres in the previous year. "Chalga" was the most watched Bulgarian film in 2023. It was shot entirely on a smartphone. A total of 112,782 people watched the film last year. Ticket revenue exceeded EUR 600,000.
