Most university students in Bulgaria study economics, pedagogy and medicine

Over half of students in Bulgarian universities are trained in professional fields such as Economics, Pedagogy, Medicine, Administration and management,  Communication and computer technology, Informatics and Computer Sciences and Law. The data are from the National Map of Higher Education, which is prepared in the Council of Ministers to serve in determining the state policy in the field of higher education and admissions in certain fields and specialties. ‎

The number of students in Bulgaria is currently close to 180 thousand. More than 116,000 students study for a bachelor's degree, 58,000 for a master's degree, and just over 5,000 students for the professional bachelor's degree. 92% of all of them are Bulgarian citizens. ‎


There are nearly 15,000 foreign students, with more than half (58.4%) of them studying in two professional areas - Medicine and Dentistry. ‎

The concentration of higher education institutions in Bulgaria is mostly in the South-Western region, where the capital Sofia is also located - 27. At the other extreme is the North-Western region of the country where only two higher education institutions are based, and four others operate through affiliates, the ‎National map of higher education shows.‎
