Austria must maintain its veto on Bulgaria and Romania, says Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner

The veto against the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area should be maintained, Austria's Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said in an interview with Di Presse.

"It's not only about Romania and Bulgaria. The entire migration system is in disarray. I am not the one making assessments about Romania and Bulgaria. I am working at the European level to make the system work. And that will only happen if the external border is protected and is an essential part of the new asylum and migration pact that the EU has agreed and that we now need to put into practice. Only then can there be full freedom of movement within the EU".

"With Romania and Bulgaria, we have taken a step forward with Schengen in the air and at sea. It is up to the Commission to make sure that the whole system works," Karner insists.
