Protesters demand relocation of monument to US pilots

Citizens organised on social networks gathered in front of the US Embassy in Sofia, demanding that the monument to fallen American pilots be moved behind the mission's fence. Protesters tried to get to the monument but were stopped by police.

The organisers of the protest had sent a letter to the embassy outlining their demands, along with a petition, said Lyubomir Dankov, one of the organisers. Dankov added that he did not expect a response. "The very presence of this monument is a sign of how we are treated. For the sake of good relations between our two nations, I think it should be moved."

The protesters distanced themselves from political parties who also want the monument moved. The reason for the protest is that 10 January marks the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Sofia by British and American bombers.
