The number of wintering waterbirds is increasing. According to the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the 48th mid-winter waterbird census in Bulgaria recorded 97 species with a total of more than 280,000

The 2023 census recorded 88 species, with a total of more than 206,000. In 2022, there were 90 species with the same number of birds, over 206,000. Despite the increase this season, the numbers are far lower than those of wintering waterbirds at the end of the last century, when they ranged from 404,000 to 652,000.

Once again this year, the three species with the highest numbers were the common spoonbill, the mallard duck and the great cormorant. The number of different species of wild geese counted has increased, including globally threatened species.
