The Bulgarian region of Smolyan has declared an influenza epidemic from 18 January to 24 January 2024. The decision was taken on the basis of an increase in the incidence of influenza and acute respiratory diseases, which has reached epidemic levels of 268.9 cases per 10 000 people, and the proven circulation of influenza viruses in the Smolyan region.

As a result, routine consultations of healthy pregnant women and children are suspended; preventive examinations, compulsory vaccinations and re-vaccinations are cancelled; visits to hospital care facilities and social institutions for children and adults are not allowed. Sick children will not be admitted to nurseries, kindergartens and schools, and sick staff will not be allowed to work.
