Agrarian producers reached an understanding with the government and are putting an end to their protests on Monday. This was announced after a meeting held by representatives of the protesting farmers with Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov and with Minister of Agriculture Kiril Vatev at the Council of Ministers.

“We have reached an understanding on the three kinds of points in the declaration we had raised additionally,” said Ilia Prodanov, chair of the National Grain Producer Association. An agreement is expected to be signed between the agrarian sector and the prime minister.

PM Denkov stated that the aid will come from the budgets of the Agriculture Ministry and the State Fund Agriculture, and that no money will be taken from other sectors. To receive it, smaller producers (with up to 300 hectares of land) will not have to prove their losses, larger producers will have to submit a statement of costs and revenue certifying they are at a loss.

“As Minister Vatev explained, depending on the area of land, the smallest producers get the biggest sum, followed by medium-sized producers, and the largest producers will get the smallest sums,” the prime minister explained, and added that when the overall picture is clear, a funding cap will be set down.

Two organizations from the industry stated they are opposed to the agreement and will continue with the roadblocks. They are the National Association of Potato Producers and the association United Agrarian Producers, who threaten to block Ilinden-Exochi border crossing with Greece.
