Unusual encounters with birds in the middle of winter

A harbinger of spring surprised the residents of the village of Podkrepa earlier than usual. The first stork arrived in the village of Podkrepa (Haskovo region) even before its residents adorned themselves with martenitsas. The stork named Dancho arrived on February 20, whereas last year it arrived in the village five days later- on February 25. The bird perched on an existing nest on an electric pole near the church of St. Prophet Elijah and immediately began preparing it for his family. In 2023, six stork couples chose Podkrepa as their home.

Meanwhile, the residents of Burgas were surprised by an unusual sight. Several days ago, a pink flamingo was spotted in "Lazur" residential complex. The exotic bird was marked with a ring by an expert ornithologist and released in the nearby "Atanasovsko Lake" reserve. In recent years, the number of pink flamingos in Lake Atanasovsko, Pomorie Lake and Poda Protected Area near Burgas has been increasing, BTA reports. Last January, ornithologists counted more than 2,700 birds wintering in these areas.
