Too much imported food is not good for Bulgarians, warns Agriculture Minister

The National Scientific and Practical Conference dedicated to the problems of the food industry was held in Plovdiv. Opening the conference, Agriculture and Food Minister Kiril Vatev said that one of the major shortcomings in food production was that raw materials were rarely of Bulgarian origin.

According to Vatev, our ancestors have been feeding off this land for thousands of years, and the microbiome that connects soil, plants, animals and humans is the most beneficial for our health, but now we are forced to consume too much imported food.

According to the Agriculture Minister, one of the biggest mistakes was the destruction of irrigated agriculture in Bulgaria, because without water on this "golden soil" there can be no production. Regarding organic food production, Vatev expressed his deep conviction that Bulgaria could be the European oasis for organic production, but the requirements and regulations are very complicated. On the subject of cooperation in the agri-food chain, Minister Vatev called on farmers to cooperate in order to be successful on the market.
