Bulgaria ranks second in the European Union in terms of the number of young people who are severely materially and socially deprived. According to Eurostat data, almost 19% of Bulgarians aged 15 to 29 are severely materially and socially deprived. Romania is first with 25.4%. In the EU, the severe material and social deprivation rate among young people was slightly above 6%. Greece comes third with 15%. On the other hand, the proportion was less than 3% in 12 EU members, including Slovenia, Austria, Luxembourg, Poland, and Sweden.

Eurostat data for 2022 also show that the severe material and social deprivation rate among young people was lower than the severe material and social deprivation rate among the total population (6.7%).
