PACE committee proposes closing post-monitoring dialogue with Bulgaria

At a meeting in Paris, the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe proposed closing the post-monitoring dialogue with Bulgaria and following the developments in the country with regard to the rule of law, democracy and human rights in the framework of its periodic reviews.

According to the Monitoring Committee, ''the constitutional amendments in the field of the judiciary constitute considerable progress in the accomplishment of Bulgaria`s commitments and obligations''. The Committee also welcomed the measures undertaken by the authorities to combat high-level corruption and the adoption of the Anti-Corruption Act Law at the end of 2023. The Committee identified considerable progress achieved with regard to freedom of expression, the combat against violence against women and the fight against hate speech. However, the Committee says that "some remaining shortcomings still require remedy, in particular with regard to the integration of the Roma population".
