Women in Bulgaria receive an average of 12.6% lower remuneration than men. However, the wage gap is much larger in a number of economic activities, indicate data from the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research at the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria. For example, in the "Finance and Insurance" sector, women's incomes are 30% lower than those of men, said Violeta Ivanova, deputy director of the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research.

Over 40% of women aged 25 to 34 have a university degree, while 28% of men in the same age group have a university degree.

Politics in the country is still perceived as a predominantly male activity with only one in four members of the current parliament being a woman. The share of female mayors is 13% and the share of female municipal councilors is less than 30%.

Most women work in trade, manufacturing, health and education.
