Bulgaria has an important role in ensuring the security of NATO's eastern flank, said US ambassador to Sofia, Kenneth Merten, at a conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the country's accession to the Alliance.

The diplomat pointed out that the two countries are friends, partners, allies. He also highlighted the aid to Ukraine and Bulgaria's role on NATO's Eastern Flank in deterring Russia. He commended the country for strengthening its defense capabilities and added that the United States is proud to support Bulgaria's efforts by funding modernization projects, including the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets and Stryker infantry vehicles.

President of the Atlantic Club Solomon Passy recalled that Bulgaria's membership in NATO prevents it from being an immediate target of Russia.
