The MPs have approved, in first reading, the establishment of a permanent Council for the Coordination of Policies for Bulgarians Abroad through an amendment to the Act on Bulgarians living outside the Republic of Bulgaria.

"The Council will help to resolve coordination issues related to the preservation and dissemination of Bulgarian language and culture among Bulgarian communities abroad and the preservation of Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage.

It will issue guidelines and recommendations for the reintegration of Bulgarian citizens who have returned to live in Bulgaria, it will protect the rights and interests of Bulgarians abroad, it will synchronise the activities of programmes and projects aimed at Bulgarian communities and their organisations abroad," the bill reads.

According to the opposition, this is yet another parallel state structure created to carry out functions already assigned to the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
