The energy poor in Bulgaria are between 25% and 40% of the population according to different methodologies. 40% of the population means 2.4 million Bulgarians who cannot make ends meet. They are considered energy-poor at the current electricity prices, and there is talk of raising prices by 20% to 40%, the President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria Plamen Dimitrov said in an interview with BNT.
He explained that there is currently a regulation for compensation, but it is not clear how it will be financed and implemented. ''People are rightly concerned and all these political skirmishes should be put aside as soon as possible, and the issue should become central, whether the government is outgoing, caretaker, or regular. This issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible", said Plamen Dimitrov and reminded that 65% of Bulgarians have income below the required minimum.
