The Bulgarian community in the Northeast of the United States traditionally marks May 24, the Day of the Slavic Alphabet and of Bulgarian Education and Culture, with a series of concerts. The celebrations will be even more festive for the Bulgarian School and Choir Gergana in New York City, which is also marking its 20th anniversary. One of the festive activities is a concert on May 19 at 12.30 pm at the Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York, as announced on the Consulate's Facebook page.

The choir was founded by jazz singer Gergana Velinova with the help of opera singer Stefka Evstatieva and pianist Pavlina Dokovska, with the support of the Consulate General in New York. The school was founded by Neli Hadjiyska at the suggestion of Gergana Velinova with the initial aim of training the children of the choir to read and understand the lyrics of Bulgarian songs.
