The population of European bison in Bulgaria is slowly recovering

Seventeen European bison have been released and live freely in the Eastern Rhodopes. They are divided into two herds, and recently the first free-born bison had its own calf. The Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation, which is working on a project to restore the previously extinct species in our country, is proud of this achievement.

The animals live in large area and although they have no natural enemies in this country, their reproduction is a slow and difficult process. Females give birth every other year. European bison eat both grass and leaves, branches and various bushes. However, the foundation is worried about climate change and the diseases brought from Africa and Asia by various insects.
