Bulgaria has significantly improved the fight against migrant trafficking

The European Commission reports positive results after the support provided by the EU for the protection of the external borders of Bulgaria and Romania.

There has been progress in the return of migrants without the right to stay in the EU, an improvement in asylum procedures and a significant improvement in the fight against traffickers, said Olivier Onidi, Deputy Director-General in charge of Schengen and Internal Security in the EU. He spoke to MEPs from the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. "Most importantly, we have been able to improve cooperation at all levels; this has led to an increased presence of the European border service Frontex," Onidi added.

The head of "Border Police" Anton Zlatanov said that the most challenging border in the EU is the one between Bulgaria and Turkey. We invest huge resources for its protection but to our great regret in 2022 and 2023, six Bulgarian officers lost their lives in the performance of their official duties along this border, Zlatanov said as quoted by BTA.
