Nurgyul Salimova achieved a draw with former world chess champion Tan Zhongyi of China in the fifth round of the Candidates Tournament in Toronto.

With the black pieces, the 20-year-old Bulgarian chess master played her game very calmly against the leader in the provisional ranking and recorded the third draw in the competition.

Salimova collected an asset of 2.5 points. She played the Caro-Kann defence and the Chinese player failed to exploit the advantage of the white pieces. After a quick exchange of pieces on the 58th move, a draw was reached.

In the remaining 3 games of the round there was also no winner.

After the fifth round, Tan Zhongyi is still in the lead with 3.5 points ahead of second-placed Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia with 3 points. Salimova shares the third position with another Russian, Kateryna Lagno, and India's Vaishali Rameshbabu with 2.5 points each.

In the next round Nurgyul Salimova will play versus Goryachkina.
