The green way of culture

Independent artists and climate experts from 8 countries are in Sofia to participate in the first European creative residency RE-IMAGINE Green

Well over 30 artists and performing arts and climate experts from several countries in Central and South-Eastern Europe - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, North Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro - have arrived in Sofia to take part in the pilot Climate Literacy Residency of the European RE-IMAGINE Green Residency Programme. The event is organised for Bulgaria by Arte Urbana Collectif, known for its innovative international projects in culture, art and education.

One of the main tasks of the residency is the interaction between artists and climate change experts, who will have the opportunity to share best practices in creating eco-sustainable artistic productions.

During the days from 8 to 12 April, participants will exchange valuable experiences and receive specialised training led by prominent, internationally recognised speakers and mentors. 

The aim is to successfully integrate specific green practices and approaches into their working process. In this way, they will be able to create, produce and manage artistic productions that draw public attention to the crucial issue of climate change and environmental protection in today's world.


Serbian climatologist Vladimir Djurdjevic will give a detailed presentation on climate change, while Croatian artist and eco-activist Luka Tomac will outline current green practices in his presentation "Ecoshift in Culture and Performing Arts". Foreign guests will have the opportunity to meet with various Bulgarian performing arts and environmental organisations.

Artists will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of additional activities to get to know and experience Sofia and its cultural and artistic landscape. Guides from the Sofia Graffiti Tour will take the visitors to the most important sites of street art in the capital city. They will also have the opportunity to see some of this season's best theatre and dance performances.

The RE-IMAGINE Green Art Practices on the Margin project is an innovative two-year European collaborative initiative, supported by the Creative Europe Programme, focusing on the green transformation of the performing arts sector in the Balkan region and Central Europe, where the green transition is still in its early stages.

The project was initiated by organisations that were among the first in their countries to promote and implement green policies in the cultural and creative sectors - Green Art Incubator (Serbia), Pro Progressione (Hungary), Lokomotiva (North Macedonia) and Arte Urbana Collectif (Bulgaria).


The residency programme consists of four five-day residencies in each partner country, including training and workshops. Following its debut in Sofia, participants will visit Hungary in July and North Macedonia in September this year, with Serbia hosting in January 2025.
