After 4 years of investigation, the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office has submitted to court the indictment against former gambling mogul Vassil Bozhkov, and another 9 persons, including officials from the now dissolved State Commission on Gambling, who stand accused of being involved in a criminal organization created for extortion, malfeasance and corruption. The charge against Bozhkov is of organizing and leading the organization.
The investigation against Bozhkov was launched at the end of 2019, and at the beginning of 2020 it became clear he had left the country. After spending 3 years in Dubai, he returned to Bulgaria in August 2023, and was detained at Sofia Airport. In February, even though he was under house arrest, Bozhkov set up a new political platform – the national movement Centre which declared that “saving Bulgaria and our people from destruction” was its goal.
