Rose-picking season in Bulgaria starts earlier because of warm spring

Harvesting of the rose petals in Bulgaria has started in the first days of May, reports BGNES. The dry and warm spring is the main reason for the beginning of the rose harvest, said rose grower Peter Simeonov from Kazanlak.

Zara Klisurova of the National Union of Rose Growers told Radio Stara Zagora that the warm weather was unfavourable for rose yields.

The expected purchase price per kilo of flowers will be up to BGN 4 (2 euro), the same as in 2023.

According to Klisurova, the price does not suit rose growers because the cost of growing the oil-bearing crop has increased because of more expensive fertilizers, chemicals and fuel.

Producers have agreed in this rose harvest to pay 1.5 leva per kilo of flowers to the pickers. But Klisurova expressed concern that the agreement might not be respected by the growers themselves.
