The government will provide EUR 19.9 million (BGN 39 million) in additional funding to increase the salaries of academic staff in state universities from 1 January 2024. The decision was made after the lecturers threatened to go on strike on May 20.
Today, the government announced that with the additional funds allocated, the minimum salary for the lowest academic position in state universities will be increased from EUR 925.44 (BGN 1,810) to EUR 1,073.71 (BGN 2,100). The increase will cover 33 state universities with 2,086 assistants and is expected to contribute to attracting and retaining young lecturers.
