Nearly 73% of Bulgarians did not visit a library, and 40 percent did not read a single book last year, according to a study by Alpha Research, announced in the Sofia-based Goethe Institute.

According to the presented data, about 63% of Bulgarians did not go to the theater, 61% did not set foot in a movie theater, and nearly 83% have not been to a classical music concert, opera or ballet last year.

39% of the survey participants answered that they have the desire, but not the financial ability, to attend cultural events, and 25% - that they do not have access to them in their place of residence. The other reasons cited are lack of company and leisure time. 13% of the respondents said that they were not interested.

Diana Andreeva from the Observatory of Economy and Culture stated that the data from the study were presented to the Ministry of Culture, but, in her words, they did not receive a response, nor were any policies taken in this direction.
