The International Day of Empathy for People Affected by HIV/AIDS goes under the motto "We remember! We accept! We support!”. On this occasion, evening vigils will be held in 28 regional cities of Bulgaria, as the lit candle symbolizes the belief that together we can overcome the stigma and provide support to those affected by the disease, the Ministry of Health reports.

The purpose of the initiative is not only to honor the memory of the victims, but also to express support to the families who have lost a loved one and to people with HIV.

In Sofia, the vigil starts at 8:00 p.m. in the square in front of "St. Nedelya" church. The lighted candles will be placed in a ribbon shape - a symbol of solidarity and in support of efforts to fight the disease.

More than 4,200 Bulgarians are carriers of HIV, according to data as of December 2023.
