Border police officers will also act as traffic police. Such an amendment to the Interior Ministry’s regulations has been put up for discussion on the government portal for public consultations. Thus, border police officers will be able to pull over vehicles and fine violators near border checkpoints and border zones.

According to the draft, border police officers will be able to catch both migrants and traffic violators. "Currently, only traffic police can issue fines or tickets. Double control in border areas will reduce violations", explained caretaker Minister of Interior Kalin Stoyanov. Collecting traffic violation fines is one of the ways to break the sense of impunity that has reigned on Bulgarian roads for years", Kalin Stoyanov added.
