Bulgaria asks EU for protection against increased egg imports from Ukraine

“A new financial instrument should be put in place to protect farmers during crises,” said caretaker Minister of Agriculture Georgi Tahov at the Agriculture Council in Brussels. He added that Bulgaria supports the proposal by Croatia and Slovenia for intervention in the strategic plans under the Common Agricultural Policy so there is an ad hoc financial support mechanism in times of crisis, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports.

The Council discussed the situation on the market as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Minister Tahov stated that there has been increased fresh hen egg imports from Ukraine since the beginning of 2024. We demand protective measures because it is breeding a great deal of tension in the sector in Bulgaria, Minister Tahov said.
