Police in Sofia arrest several people over vote buying

A week before the elections for National Assembly and European Parliament, the police in Sofia are conducting an operation against vote buying.

Several people were detained in the neighborhood of "Fakulteta" for violating the political rights of citizens. An illegal gambling hall with 11 slot machines was also found. The police are also working on cases involving people with gambling debts who were persuaded to vote for a party in exchange for clearing the debt. Lists of names and specific amounts was found at one of the checked addresses.

As part of the operation, which started a few days ago, 27 people were detained, the head of the 3-rd Police Department, Ivaylo Velichkov, said. Seven pre-trial proceedings have been initiated.
