By a decision from 6 June, the Council of Ministers has decreed emergency repairs of the fence along Bulgaria’s border with Turkey, BNR-Burgas reports. The urgent repair and renovation work on the border barrier is to be completed by 31 December, 2024.
Construction of the barrier was started by the military in 2014, after which the construction work passed into private hands, but the high cost forced the government to re-take charge of the construction work. There are quite a few breaches of the fence, which illegal migrants have been taking advantage of. The need for better protection of our border comes in light of Bulgaria’s wish to join the Schengen area by land, adds Alexandra Markaryan from BNR-Burgas.
