BSP leader Korneliya Ninova resigns over election results

At a briefing following the announcement of the final results of the national and European Parliament elections, BSP leader Korneliya Ninova announced her resignation. The Bulgarian Socialist Party won 7% of the vote in both elections, a result that Ninova described as "catastrophic".

A national council will now be convened to elect one of the party's vice-presidents to lead the party until its congress, which will elect a new leader. Ninova said that despite her resignation, she would remain a member of the National Assembly.

The day after the elections, the BSP youth organisation called for Ninova's resignation because of the left's poor performance. We recall that this is not the first time that Ninova has stepped down because of the BSP's election results. She had already resigned in 2019, but later withdrew her resignation, and in 2021, but the resignation was subsequently rejected by the BSP congress.
