Bulgarian students win full set of medals at IBO 2024 in Kazakhstan

Victor Lilov is the first Bulgarian teenager to claim gold in the world's two toughest biology and chemistry competitions

Bulgarian students have won a full set of medals - gold, silver and bronze - at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Kazakhstan. The Bulgarians competed against 320 students from 80 countries in the world's most prestigious biology tournament of the year. 

The gold medal winner was Victor Lilov (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics), ranked 9th in the world among the best biology students, according to the Ministry of Education. This year, Victor also won a gold medal in the International Mendeleev Competition in Chemistry, becoming the first Bulgarian student to win gold in both top international biology and chemistry competitions.

The silver from Kazakhstan went to Momchil Petkov (12th grade, National High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics) and the bronze to Victor-Alexander Radanov (12th grade, National High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics).

To date, Bulgarian students have won a total of 81 medals - 10 gold, 17 silver and 54 bronze - from all editions of the International Biology Olympiad.
